Rod Thomas of Bright Light Bright Light Interview + Official Video for “A New World To Say”
1. In the music video, we have to ask, why balloons?
It was Hollie’s (the director’s) idea. She wanted to make something really colourful and fun to play around with the energy of the song. But also balloons, and things that can burst, tie in with the idea of hopes and dreams which can deflate, inflate, burst, float away etc. I liked her idea of me sort of drowning in balloons like you can get overwhelmed by all your hopes and desires.
2. What musical influences did you look to when producing ‘A New Word to Say?
I produced it in LA with Boom Bip, who was one half of one of my favourite bands Neon Neon. Even though it was January we recorded it in 90 degree blazing sunshine, and I think that comes across in the music. So influences were lots of the 80s electro bands like Yazoo, (or Yaz in the US I believe they were called?) Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys… His production is great, and I love the direction he took the song in.
3. What is the message behind the song and the album, Make Me Believe In Hope?
The song is about a failing connection with something. When you’re stuck in a cycle and don’t quite know how to get out of it. The album is all about connections – with people and places – and how these connections inspire more or less hope. Like if a person teases out a different side of you, and makes you feel like anything is possible so it gives you the belief you can change a situation, or maybe a place you live is oppressive. There’s no “this is how it is” message to the record, but it explores how your connections with your surroundings change your perception of yourself.
4. What do you hope fans will take from listening to the album?
I hope that fans feel like it was made with a lot of love. It’s been a real blast making the record, such a fun process, I hope that for people listening for the first time, it’s as rewarding as it was for me to make.
5. So what is the next step from here? What are your plans following the premiere?
Well, the album will come out on 26th June in the US, we’ll be doing some UK and European live shows, and there’s plenty more audio and visual material to come. Hopefully a very exciting year!
