Review: ‘Love Is Not Enough’ Remix Package

Group Therapy, the acclaimed sophomore LP by Britain’s Above & Beyond, proves to be a trance world gift that keeps on giving with the recent release of a remix package featuring the album’s standout track ‘Love Is Not Enough.’

The EP, released on Above & Beyond’s own Anjunabeats label, features ten treatments of the trio’s dreamy synth single. The original track and nearly all of the subsequent remixes feature the gorgeously ethereal vocals of British chanteuse Zoë Johnston. The singer’s contribution adds a layer of emotional resonance that makes ‘Love Is Not Enough’ at once relatable and otherworldly.

There are no real missteps in this collection, only a diverse array of takes on a fundamentally beautiful song by a crew of artists from the trance world and beyond. Britain’s Synkro offers a elegantly minimalist take, while Anjuna prodigy Mat Zo (appearing as MRZO) conjures up a dance floor ready drum and bass version. Things dip farther into the deep beat glitch realm with a sprawling contribution by Israeli producer and fellow Anjunabeats contributor Maor Levi. Above & Beyond’s own club mix finds the track big room ready, as does a treatment by Andrew Bayer & James Grant, who maintain ‘Love Is Not Enough’s dreamy Ibiza sunrise vibe while working in layers of rich bass and a soulful female vocal sample.

The EP’s clear standout comes from Kaskade, who bathes ‘Love is Not Enough’ in his signature progressive beats and elevates the track to anthem levels of shimmering house.

This eclectic but ultimately cohesive EP is a worthy addition to any trance catalog and also serves as an approachable introduction to the work of Above & Beyond and the trance genre at large.
